There are no words...except, ****!

Something horrible has happened.

My 4-month-old, never been dropped or assaulted with water MacBook recently died. Frozen on the gray screen of death (apparently the PC's blue screen of death is gray for Macs, BTW).

What. The. **** (insert which ever four-letter word you think appropriate).

I took my beloved laptop to the Apple store the other day and they said there's something wrong with the hard drive and the only way to fix it is to clear it and start it over.

I don't have anything backed up.

****!!!

I wasn't too concerned at first, because most of the documents I can access again through my sent mail on gmail or here. I luckily didn't have much that I'd written that I couldn't get back from elsewhere.

I was upset about it, of course, but I could handle it.

Then.

I was texting Sister and explaining what happened and realized...

I had a lot of really important stuff saved in the little yellow notepad thinggy that I will lose.

Important stuff like:
My TBR list, that had something like 50 books on it
Some brainstorming ideas for my novel (that I get to FINALLY start writing in just over 2 weeks!)
Ideas I've had for other books
And some other stuff that I don't remember but feel sure was important

Again, I say: ****!

The only good thing in all of this is that because the computer was only 4 months old, it is still covered in the warranty, so I don't have to pay anything.

One of the most frustrating parts, you know, besides losing everything from the past 4 months? They couldn't even really tell me what happened! Just that hard drives have moving parts and it's common for them to get messed up. What?

And the only thing I can do to try to prevent it from happening again is to not get it wet (DUH!) and to power it down when I move it.

That's it?

Moral of the story:

BACK EVERYTHING UP!!!

I should have learned that lesson 8 months ago when my iPhone got wet and I'd never backed anything up and I lost everything. But no, I didn't learn my lesson.

I'm going to get either a 32 GB thumb drive thing or an external hard drive and back that thing up like there's no tomorrow.

Please do the same, dear readers. I would hate for anyone else to lose stuff like I did.

But, what I need from you is this:

What books should I add to my new TBR list? There's no way I can remember them all, so tell me what your favorite books are, or books that you are excited to read so I can start over.

Thank you in advance!

And again....

Ugh.

And, ****!!!

  1. You poor thing! I wish I had a good recommendation for your TBR list, but I don't. I have lots of great ideas for a TBW list (to be watched). There are lots of shows I plan on catching up on this summer. Also I back everything up in the cloud, google drive, in addition to a hard copy like a thumb drive. Maybe try that?
(1st thing on my TBW list: Downton Abbey)

    1. Oh, I love Downton Abbey so, so much. What other shows are you planning on catching up on? It seems we have similar taste, so I'm curious what other shows have drawn your attention.

    2. Well I'm also considering finding Game of Thrones and seeing what all the hooplah is all about, although I don't have HBO, so... idk. I'm definitely going to re-watch all the episodes of this season's New Girl. My sister says I need to watch the Mindy Project, eh, maybe. Definitely Mad Men. I've seen you post things about Lizzie Diaries, and I LOVE me some Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, so I'm gonna check that out. And my favorite soap opera ended over a year ago, but apparently Hulu has picked up a limited number of episodes that started recently, and so I need to check that out. Is there anything I'm missing that you suggest?

  2. Oh man, that's terrible! I live in fear of technology failing me, so I always back everything up. Plus, I emailed my manuscript to myself and my sister, just in case. And I have a tendency to print things off still, because paper feels reliable to me. I'm just a bit paranoid. As far as book recommendations go, I'm not sure what all you've read, but these are some that I've enjoyed: Grave Mercy, Through the Ever Night, Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Blood Red Road, Shatter Me, Unspoken, Shadow and Bone, Throne of Glass, Cinder, The Night Circus, Splintered, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, This is What Happy Looks Like, Legend, The Madman's Daughter, Divergent, The Maze Runner, The Sky is Everywhere, Amy & Roger's Epic Detour, Everneath, Starling, Eleanor & Park, Out of the Easy. Those are some of the best ones I've read and several of them have sequels. The list could be longer, but I don't want to overload you. Do you have a Goodreads account? If you do, you could always make a shelf on your account for books you'd like to read, then if your computer dies your list is safe. So sorry to hear this happened to you, and I hope the new MacBook will last longer!

    1. Thanks for the awesome list!! And I've only read 4 of them, so that's a lot of new ones to add! I know some of them were on my list that I lost, but some are new. I need to get a good printer, I do like having things printed out. But yes, I need better some electronic back ups as well. Thanks for your concern; if nothing else, I learned my lesson before risking the loss of my WIP.

  4. Oh man, I'm so sorry! I've had 2 laptops die on me in the last 4 years, right in the middle of projects so I feel your pain. I got all my stuff back thanks to my compulsion to email myself everything all the time, but each time I lost so much music it wasn't even funny. I hope your new one works a lot better!!!

  5. It's a good thing I read my sister's comment, because I probably would have repeated most of what she already said. That's awful that this happened to you. I had something similar happen to me about a year ago, and thankfully they managed to retrieve the one file I really cared about: everything pertaining to my WIP. But talk about frustrating and panic-inducing. I have an external hard drive that I try to remember to back everything up to, especially after this episode, but lately I've been a bit complacent. This is a good reminder!

And I second Erin's comment about Goodreads. That's where I keep my TBR list because it's online and I don't have to worry about losing it.

  6. Oh, no! Disaster! Hope you and your Mac have recovered from the shock now. :) I know I should back my work up better, thanks for the reminder!

Been reading the comments above with interest as I need some new books for my own TBR list! I'll just add a few of my favourites: The Knife of Never Letting Go and its sequels by Patrick Ness, and a second vote to Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins.
